I'm interested in a position - do I need to submit selection criteria or attend an interview?

To ensure that the best person is selected for each job, appointments to the ACTPS are on the basis of merit. This means the person who is judged most likely to best perform the duties of the position is recommended for the appointment. Selections are based on assessing the relevant abilities, qualifications, experience, personal qualities and potential for development. The principles of merit, equity and diversity and procedural fairness are integral to recruitment processes in the ACTPS.

Vacancies may be advertised in several ways. Most vacancies require the applicant to address selection criteria. This involves writing to set criteria, applicants should provide examples that demonstrate how they are able to meet aspects of the criteria.

Applications are then assessed as the basis of selection or used to shortlist for further assessment.  This may be in the form of an interview, practical test or other assessment relevant to the role.

How are staff employed in the ACT Government?

It is the policy of the ACT Government that the terms and conditions of employment for ACT Public Service (ACTPS) employees are defined in enterprise agreements. ACTPS enterprise agreements contain a range of generous provisions that are designed to make the employment experience in the ACT Government as rewarding as possible. For more information about the employment arrangements see Conditions of Employment on this site.

My salary in the Commonwealth is higher than the equivalent level in ACTPS - will the ACTPS match my current salary level?

Salaries for ACTPS classifications are set out in ACTPS enterprise agreements. Most successful applicants for appointment will be commenced at the base increment point of a classification, although there are several mechanisms for an applicant to negotiate a higher commencing salary. These negotiations should be initiated by the applicant at the time of interview. Applicants should refer to the enterprise agreement for the relevant directorate to familiarise themselves with the mechanisms available to negotiate a higher commencing salary.

What is the ACTPS super contribution?

For new employees, the ACTPS offers a choice of superannuation funds ('Super Choice'). The ACT Government currently contributes 10.5% of an employee's salary into their nominated fund.  Employees may also make personal contributions to their fund.  The ACT Government will contribute an additional 1% of salary to an employee's fund where the employee has elected to personally contribute at least 3% of their salary into their fund.

Employees who are currently members of either the Public Sector Superannuation (defined benefit) Scheme or the Commonwealth Superannuation Scheme may elect to continue to contribute to these superannuation funds.

My super in the Commonwealth is 15.4% - will the ACTPS match this amount?

Access to the Public Sector Superannuation Accumulation Plan scheme was closed to new ACT Government employees in 2006.  The ACTPS offers a choice of superannuation funds to new employees who are not members of either the Public Sector Superannuation Scheme defined benefit or Commonwealth Superannuation Scheme.

I work interstate - will the ACTPS provide relocation expenses?

ACTPS enterprise agreements do provide for relocation expenses. Applicants should refer to the enterprise agreement for the relevant directorate to familiarise themselves with the mechanisms available to negotiate relocation expenses.
