The ACT Education Directorate seeks a passionate and qualified Automotive Technology Teacher for a senior secondary school setting at Melba Copland Secondary School in Canberra.

About the Senior College Campus:

Melba Copland Secondary School (MCSS) is a dual campus year 7 to 12 school with rapidly growing enrolments of over 1000 students. MCSS is the only government school in the Canberra region providing secondary education for students from years 7 to 12. MCSS provides a rich education for a diverse range of learning needs and focuses on delivering engaging learning opportunities and diverse post-education and career planning pathways for all students.

We are seeking an Automotive Teacher responsible for the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning programs to students in Years 10-12. As a permanent Automotive teacher, you will deliver curriculum in line with the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies (BSSS) accredited Automotive courses and nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications within the Automotive Training Package.

The successful applicant will develop students' technical knowledge, practical skills, employability capabilities and industry readiness through engaging, safe and contemporary automotive education programs. The role includes the delivery, assessment and validation of both BSSS and VET competencies, maintenance of compliance requirements, and fostering industry partnerships that support authentic learning and student pathways into apprenticeships, further study and employment.

• You hold a recognised tertiary teaching qualification.
• Develop and implement engaging lessons that incorporate both theoretical and practical skills.
• Are dedicated to creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment for every student.
• Maintain a safe and well-organised workshop environment, ensuring students adhere to safety protocols.
• Foster positive relationships with students, staff and the broader school community.
• Have experience teaching secondary year levels and can demonstrate knowledge and successful application of Automotive studies.

Eligibility requirements:

To be eligible to be employed as a teacher in an ACT public school, you must have:

• Education qualifications – Have an approved four-year full-time tertiary teaching qualification.

• Vocational competency in the automotive industry and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment are highly desirable. For the right applicant, the school will support the attainment of these qualifications where required.
• Applicants with qualifications gained outside of Australia should complete a skills assessment by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) to confirm qualification requirements and English language proficiency to teach in Australian schools. Detailed information is available from the AITSL website.
• Teacher registration – Hold a valid approval to teach with the ACT Teacher Quality Institute (TQI). If you do not hold a teacher registration with the ACT TQI, we suggest starting your application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity. Teachers holding registration in another Australian state or territory or New Zealand are eligible for mutual recognition.
• Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration – Have a valid ACT WWVP. If you don’t, we suggest starting your application process at the same time.
• Approved working in Australia status as either an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a valid working visa.
