The ACT Electoral Commission is an independent statutory authority responsible for the conduct of elections and referendums for the ACT Legislative Assembly. It provides information and advice to a wide range of stakeholders including; the Assembly, the Speaker, the Minister responsible for electoral matters, the Executive, agencies, political parties, MLAs and electoral candidates. The Commission also has a key role in electoral matters such as the electoral boundary redistribution process, and reviewing appeals challenging decisions of the Commissioner, or the Commissioner's delegates. The Commission comprises three statutory office holders including; the Chairperson, the Electoral Commissioner, and a Commission Member, who are supported by Elections ACT.

The Commission Chairperson is a part-time appointment and will involve four in-person sessions /meetings in Canberra per year, in addition to out-of-session work which can be managed remotely. Preferred candidates will have demonstrable high-level senior leadership experience, in electoral systems management, public administration, or another area that is relevant to and consistent with the Commission’s functions.

To be eligible, individuals must not have been at any time in the previous 10 years, a member of the Legislative Assembly, the Parliament of the Commonwealth or the legislature of a State or another Territory. A person who is or has been a member of a political party at any time in the last five years is also not eligible for appointment.
