Details: This is an excellent opportunity to work in an anti-corruption agency, providing advisory, advocacy and leadership to prevent, investigate and expose corrupt conduct.

The Commission provides a unique, hands-on professional opportunity to work closely with the General Counsel, the ACT Integrity Commissioner (a former Supreme Court judge), and CEO to provide leadership and manage legal risks and services across the organisation.

This role is also pivotal in fostering a collaborative working environment and partnering with the other teams of the Commission to ensure the Commission’s objectives are met.

As a senior member of the Legal Team, you will play a key role in supporting the Commission's mandate to investigate and report on allegations of corruption, maladministration and other breaches of public trust within government bodies and the public sector.

You will be responsible for managing and mentoring the members of the Legal Team, providing clear guidance and supporting the professional development of staff, while upholding the highest standards of legal practice and ethical conduct.

You will collaborate with teams across the organisation to provide in-house legal services for the Commission’s operational purposes, including its assessment and investigation functions.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must have admission as a practitioner of the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory.
  • A security clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1), accordingly, applications can only be considered from those with Australian citizenship
  • The role requires a high level of legal expertise, particularly in public and administrative law, with a working knowledge of criminal and/or civil litigation. As the role includes acting as Counsel Assisting in private and public examinations, competent advocacy skills, both in adducing and testing evidence as well as in making arguments are essential.
  • Demonstrated writing competence is essential, not only for providing opinions on legal questions but to assist with the drafting of investigative reports for submission to the ACT Legislative Assembly and legal instruments under the IC Act.  The role will also involve ensuring that the Commission’s coercive powers are exercised lawfully in line with human rights considerations and the need for objectivity, fairness and impartiality.
  • This role is suited to an experienced legal professional, ideally with extensive experience in the conduct of inquisitorial inquiries, or other investigative processes, who is seeking to make a meaningful contribution to public integrity.
