The Department of Cardiology is well-established with 11 consultant medical staff and three Advanced Trainees in Cardiology. There are two cardiac catheter laboratories which undertake a total of 700 coronary interventional procedures annually. The unit provides a 24/7 service for primary PCI for acute ST elevation myocardial infarction for the region. The coronary care unit is a 15-bed unit with an additional three short stay beds for the chest pain evaluation unit (CPEU). The coronary care unit has 2000 acute and elective admissions and the CPEU 1000 patient assessments annually. The cardiology outpatient service provides up to 4500 episodes of care annually with increasing demand each year. There is a close working relationship with our busy cardiothoracic surgical unit. Clinical cardiac electrophysiology services commenced in April 2019 with complex ablation procedures, an arrhythmia clinic, cardiac device clinics. Cardiac CT program commenced in 2017 in collaboration with the Department of Radiology. The department is supported by dedicated heart function and pulmonary hypertension clinics designed to provide ready access to phone advice, education on self-management, avoid recurrent presentations and to assist with reducing length of hospitalisation by early bridging to outpatient care or closer to home care program.

As the Cardiology Registrar you will provide effective supervised day to day clinical management of both ambulatory and admitted patients, whist fulfilling the RACP requirements for Cardiology training and completing the assessments required at the carious stages of training as per the Advanced Training in Cardiology – Adult Medicine training program curriculum. All the new training requirements from 2022 will be accommodated within Canberra Health Services.

The successful candidate will undergo extensive training in clinical cardiology which includes management of patients in coronary care and chest pain evaluation unit, emergency department day unit and general cardiology ward. Outpatient cardiology clinics including heard function clinic, pulmonary hypertension, cardio obstetrics, general cardiology consultation and preadmission clinic. The candidate will also undergo training in invasive cardiology as well as non-invasive cardiology with basic and advanced echocardiography, stress testing, EP, device implantation as well as Cardiac CT.

The candidate will be required to participate in the afterhours on call cardiology roster 1:4 whilst in the Canberra Hospital. There is a rotational component to this position to North Canberra Hospital for a period of three months.
