Fair Trading and Compliance comprises several units responsible for ensuring legislative compliance relating to consumer protection and regulatory compliance. This branch achieves its objectives through a combination of inspections, compulsory conciliations, investigations, education, compliance action and enforcement. We work collaboratively with other jurisdictions in relation to the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) to provide positive outcomes for Canberra consumers.
The Conciliations team administers the Compulsory Conciliation Scheme contained in the Fair Trading (Australian Consumer Law) Act 1992 on behalf of the Commissioner for Fair Trading. The team brings consumers and businesses together to resolve their dispute in a cooperative way through an alternative dispute resolution process facilitated by an Access Canberra Conciliation Officer. The Compulsory Conciliation Scheme provides a mechanism for consumers to receive a refund, repair, or replacement by coming to an agreement with the business with which they have a consumer dispute.
The team is also responsible for managing other ACL-related complaints in collaboration with other teams within the Business Unit. The Conciliation Officer role provides a critical function in achieving appropriate regulatory outcomes both through early resolution, conciliation and the use of various regulatory levers.
Eligibility/Other Requirements: Previous experience with the Australian Consumer Law is highly desirable.
Note: An order of merit will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months.
