With over 19 million bus boardings each year, we’re looking for individuals who bring outstanding customer service skills, clear communication, professional presentation and a strong and safe driving record. To be a successful bus operator you need to:

  • Have great map reading and time-keeping skills and be able to follow a regular schedule over specified routes of travel
  • Be able to operate a public transit vehicle, ensuring safe and comfortable carriage of all customers
  • Meet Transport Canberra’s eligibility and suitability requirements
  • Actively participate in allocated shifts, inclusive of early morning, day, evening, night, and split shifts and working a reasonable number of weekends.

Note:
Training pathway

Successful applicants will begin on a full-time temporary contract while completing a 4.5-week comprehensive training program. Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll be offered permanent part time employment.

Part-Time hours, the full-time salary noted above will be paid pro-rata.

As a part-time driver, you’ll be guaranteed a minimum of 20 hours (rostered) per week with the possibility of being allocated shifts up to a maximum of 30 hours (rostered) per week. All drivers must be available to work Monday through Friday (inclusive).

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

  • Driver’s licence C-class is essential
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Medium Rigid (MR) licence and Public Vehicle Driving Authority (PVDA)
  • Ability to obtain a Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence between 6 to 12 months after commencing with Transport Canberra
  • Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment checks including police check, medical assessment, psychometric assessment, Language, literacy, and numeracy assessment, and a heavy vehicle driving assessment if you hold a MR or HR Licence
  • Be able to meet Transport Canberra’s bus driver seat weight range requirements (50kg – 130kg) as rated by the (relevant) seating manufacturer and have a standing reach of at least 210cm.
  • Australian Citizens and visa holders are eligible to apply for both permanent and temporary roles. Those with eligible visas may be considered for permanent employment, while individuals with temporary residency or limited-duration visas may be offered permanent employment for the duration of their visas.
  • This position does require a pre-employment medical
  • This position does require a Working with Vulnerable People Check.
