Roads ACT is responsible for the management of the territorial and municipal roads, national highways, community paths, stormwater network, bridges, carpark facilities, traffic signals, streetlights and associated infrastructure. Roads ACT manage these assets on behalf of the ACT Government for the enjoyment of the Canberra community.

The Works business unit undertakes predominantly in-housework, providing a 24/7 incident response service, street sweeping services, road lines and signs maintenance, roadside furniture maintenance, road grading and small to medium sized road maintenance services including asphalt works.

We’re seeking a reliable, safety focused and motivated individuals to fill several positions for Concrete Labourer within the Works team. The position will primarily carry out general concreting and road maintenance activities.

Roads ACT is looking for candidates who have worked on construction sites on a road environment, preferably with some concreting experience. The position may rotate across all road maintenance crews and carry out other related duties in the team, depending on operational requirements where your will enhance new skills within the team to ensure competency.

The successful candidate is responsible for supporting preparation, pouring, demolition and disposal of existing concrete assets, screeding and finishing of concrete. Assist with general construction and maintenance task for territory assets such as roads, driveways, kerbs, and gutter and verges. Operates hand and power tools safely and efficiently and ensure the work adheres to all standard operating procedures and is safely undertaken.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:  

  • Visa holders are eligible to apply for both permanent and temporary roles. Those with eligible visas may be considered for permanent employment, while individuals with temporary residency or limited-duration visas may be offered permanent employment for the duration of their visas.
  • Traffic controller (TCR) essential or ability to obtain within three months of appointment.
  • Implement traffic control plans (IMP) essential or ability to obtain within three months of appointment.
  • CPCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry essential.
  • 11084NAT - Asbestos awareness card or a willingness to obtain is essential - Asbestos Awareness Training and evidence of completion delivered by a Registered Training Organisation is required before commencement, for further information refer to: Asbestos Awareness Training - WorkSafe ACT
  • 10830NAT - Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention essential
  • HLTAIDO11 - Provide First Aid essential or ability to obtain within six months of appointment.
  • Current driver’s licence Class C essential, class MR (medium rigid) essential or obtainable within three months of appointment.
  • Competent in mobile software applications and the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • This position does require a pre-employment medical.

Applicants are made aware that the essential requirements to be obtained within the period prescribed above are a mandatory requirement to successfully complete the probation and to be appointed permanently to this position.

Roads ACT will support the successful applicant through the training requirements by organising up to two sessions at the cost to Roads ACT. Should additional attempts be required to obtain the applicable license/certificate in the period prescribed, the costs to acquire these will be borne by the successful applicant.

To be eligible to progress beyond GSO5 pay increment 5.3 requires:

  • Attainment of a Certificate II in Civil Construction (Road Construction and Maintenance) or other equivalent relevant certification as approved by the Senior Manager, Roads ACT.
  • In the absence of Certificate II training providers, Roads ACT supports the attainment of Certificate III in Civil Construction (Road Construction and Maintenance) or other equivalent relevant certification as approved by the Senior Director, Works, Roads ACT. After successful completion of the minimum certificate II requirements, the pay increment can be increased beyond the GSO5.4 through an accelerated incremental advancement.

Notes: There are several full-time permanent positions that are available immediately. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
