Details: The Statutory Planning Division is responsible for assessing and determining development applications, administering the ACT leasehold system, assisting the ACT Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal in its review of decisions, providing advice to the community and industry on development matters, and the environmental assessment process.
As an officer within the Statutory Planning Division, you will often be the first point of contact between the Directorate, the community and industry and must have excellent communication skills and the ability to provide consistent high levels of customer service. You will provide advice, information and recommendations to senior officers to assist in decision making and prepare input for correspondence with members of the public.
You must be a team player, with the ability to work independently, identify solutions to problems and contribute to a positive team culture.
Development Assessment Team
The Development Assessment Team is responsible for assessing and determining development applications (DAs) under the Planning Act 2023. These are formal delegated functions of the independent Territory Planning Authority and include proposals such as commercial proposals, multi-unit, mixed use development, estate development plans, industrial and infrastructure proposals, and lease variations.
The Statutory assessments teams also assist review and appeal bodies, including the ACT Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal in its review of decisions.
Gateway Team / Duty Planner
As an officer in the DA Gateway team, you will be the first point of contact between the Planning Delivery Division and the community and development industry. You will have excellent communication skills and will provide advice over the counter, on the phone, in writing, and through pre-application meetings. You will research and interpret planning legislation, undertake assessments of development proposals and make recommendations to senior delegates. You will be a team player, with the ability to also work independently, and contribute to a culture of constant improvement and innovation.
The Team also handles the assessment and decision process of exemption declarations.
Environmental Assessment Team
The Environmental Assessment Team is responsible for managing environmental assessment processes for significant DAs and proposals with a potential for a significant environmental impact from development proposed in the ACT.
This includes assessing Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) and Environmental Significance Opinions (ESOs) in accordance with the Planning Act 2023 and assessing and determining DAs. The team also has responsibility for reporting on the implementation of strategic assessments in accordance with the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and administration of bilateral agreements with the Commonwealth relating to environmental assessment.
Eligibility/Other requirements: Experience or qualifications in local and regional planning, environmental, architecture, urban design or town planning would be an advantage.
Notes: These are temporary positions available immediately for a period of 12 months with the possibility of permanency.
A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.

City and Environment
