Transport Canberra is seeking enthusiastic and motivated Heavy Vehicle Apprentices at all stages of their apprenticeship journey to join our skilled workshop teams. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience maintaining one of the ACT Government's largest and most diverse vehicle fleets while contributing to safe, reliable, and sustainable public transport services for the Canberra community.

We have anticipated vacancies for temporary full-time Heavy Vehicle Apprentice Mechanic positions across our North, South and Central Region Depots.

As a Heavy Vehicle Apprentice Mechanic, you will work alongside experienced tradespeople in a supportive and collaborative environment, developing the technical skills and knowledge needed to build a successful career in the heavy vehicle industry.

In this role, you will:

• Learn to inspect, service, diagnose and repair a wide range of fleet vehicles under supervision.
• Gain valuable hands-on experience while completing formal trade training requirements.
• Contribute to maintaining a modern fleet that delivers safe, reliable and sustainable transport services to the Canberra community.
• Promote high standards of workmanship, quality and service delivery.
• Work safely and effectively within a professional workshop environment.
• Collaborate with skilled mechanics and apprentices to support workshop operations and achieve team outcomes.
• This role offers exposure to a variety of vehicles, equipment and technologies, providing an excellent foundation for a long-term career in the automotive and transport industry.

Eligibility/Other requirements:

• Visa holders are eligible to apply for both permanent and temporary roles. Those with eligible visas may be considered for permanent employment, while individuals with temporary residency or limited-duration visas may be offered permanent employment for the duration of their visas.
• Individuals on visas with Australian working rights are eligible to apply for temporary non-ongoing roles.
• Possession of a year 10 or year 12 certificate (or equivalent) is desirable.
• A pre-employment criminal history check will be conducted.
• This position does require a pre-employment medical.
• Possession of or the ability to obtain a motor vehicle licence and or the ability to obtain a Transport Canberra yard licence.
• Ability to work rostered shifts, including early mornings, evenings and across multiple workshop locations as required.

Notes: This is a temporary position available from 18 January 2027 to 17 January 2031 with possibility of extension up to five years.

A merit pool may be established from this selection process and may be used to fill identical future vacancies over the following 12 months.
