Details: The Director, Transformation and Operations (Theatre) position at the Canberra Theatre Centre is a unique and high-impact leadership role supporting arts and culture in the ACT at a time of major growth and renewal.
You will be based in the heart of Civic Square within Canberra’s premier performing arts venue, working alongside technical experts, production teams, and arts professionals, and partnering closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership team to shape the future of the organisation—including preparation for a new 2,000-seat Lyric Theatre.
The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on delivery, ensuring the Theatre Centre is operationally ready, safe, and sustainable while driving transformation and continuous improvement across the organisation. Your work will span a diverse range of responsibilities, making every day both dynamic and rewarding:
- leading organisation-wide transformation and renewal initiatives, translating strategic direction into clear operational outcomes and performance measures
- providing high-level advice to senior leadership on priorities, risks, and opportunities in a complex performing arts environment
- ensuring operational readiness for productions, events, and new and evolving venues, including integrated planning across technical production, programming, venue hire, and facilities
- strengthening systems, governance, and processes to improve efficiency, service quality, and long-term sustainability
- embedding strong safety, compliance, and risk management practices across all aspects of theatre operations
- leading workforce planning, recruitment, and capability development to support both current operations and future growth
- building a high-performing, collaborative and accountable culture, with a focus on leadership and change capability
- working as a key member of the senior leadership team and engaging with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including representing the Theatre Centre in complex operational and government environments.
We’re looking for an experienced and collaborative leader who thrives in complex settings and enjoys driving meaningful organisational change. You will bring a track record of leading transformation initiatives, strong knowledge of performing arts or comparable operational environments, the ability to build capability and lead teams through change, and highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills. A commitment to public sector values, including respect, integrity, collaboration, and inclusion, is essential.
In return, we offer a rare opportunity to play a leading role in shaping Canberra’s cultural future, working within a creative and inclusive environment and contributing to one of the ACT’s most prominent cultural institutions. You will be part of a passionate team delivering world-class performing arts experiences while building the foundations for the next era of growth and innovation.
We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people with diverse thoughts, lived experience, and perspectives can thrive and contribute their unique talents to the ACTPS and ACT community. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, younger and older workers, and people with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities to apply.
