Details: The Social Policy Section within the Health Policy and Strategy Branch is seeking experienced and highly motivated Senior Policy Officers to contribute to some of the ACT's most significant and complex health and social policy priorities.

Working across areas including disability health, LGBTIQA+ health, and reproductive and women's health, you will help shape policy, programs, legislation and system reform initiatives that improve health outcomes and health equity for diverse communities. This is a dynamic role that combines policy development with program management, governance, secretariat and stakeholder engagement. You will work closely with community organisations, people with lived experience, service providers, advisory groups and government stakeholders, providing policy advice, managing projects and funded initiatives, supporting boards and committees, and contributing to the delivery of high-profile government priorities.

We are looking for people who bring sound judgement, strong relationship management skills and experience working in complex and sensitive environments. If you are motivated by meaningful reform, working collaboratively with communities, and influencing outcomes that matter to the health and wellbeing of Canberrans, we encourage you to apply.

Health and Community Services Directorate (HCSD) is an inclusive employer where all people are respected and valued for their contribution. We strongly encourage and welcome applications from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, People with Disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse
backgrounds, veterans, mature age workers and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people.

The positions are based at 6 Bowes Street, Phillip, with flexible hybrid working arrangements available. Given the collaborative and relationship-focused nature of the work, team members are encouraged to maintain a regular in-off ice presence while balancing flexibility and individual circumstances.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

  • Prior to commencement, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Experience in policy development, program delivery, project management, contract management and/or stakeholder engagement within government, health, human services or related sectors will be highly regarded.
  • An understanding of issues affecting priority populations and a commitment to inclusive, person-centred approaches is desirable.

Note: This is a temporary position available immediately for six months with the possibility of extension up to 12 months and/or permanency.

This recruitment process is being used to fill several vacancies within the Social Policy Section. Successful applicants may be placed in the Disability Health Policy, LGBTIQA+ Health, or Family and Inclusion teams based on operational requirements, skills, experience and candidate preferences where possible.

A merit pool will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill similar vacancies across the Health and Community Services Directorate over the next 12 months.

Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.

How to Apply: Please submit

  1. A pitch of no more than two pages demonstrating your skills and experience relevant to the position capabilities under the 'What you Require' heading in the Position Description.
  2. A current Curriculum Vitae (maximum four pages)
  3. Contact details of at least two relevant referees.

Applications should be submitted via the Apply Now button below.

Note: Under the ACTPS employment framework you may be placed in another role where required for the efficient administration of the service.

Where an offer of employment is for a fixed-term period, any related temporary contracts within the Territory will be issued in compliance with the requirements and applicable exceptions outlined in the Fair Work Act.

The ACT public service is committed to closing the gap, underpinned by the belief that when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a genuine say in the design and delivery of policies, programs and services that affect them, better life outcomes are achieved. More information can be found here ACT Closing the Gap Implementation Plan - ACT Government Transparency Portal.
