The Organisation
Following a recent machinery-of-government review, a new ACT Health and Community Services Directorate has been established with effect from 1 July 2025. The Directorate:
- oversees the ACT health system and the delivery of policy and planning for publicly funded health services across the Territory; and
- is responsible for a wide range of human services policy and service delivery functions, including funding of community organisations, to assist people who are disadvantaged or experiencing a crisis.
The Directorate has an annual budget of approximately $900M and a staffing complement of around 2000 FTE.
The Position
In this high profile and challenging role, you will be responsible for the governance and leadership of a large, diverse and complex Directorate. You will be required to provide reliable, timely and robust advice to multiple Ministers and Cabinet in relation to policies, strategies and service delivery. You will also work closely with the Head of Service and other Directors-General and agency heads, including the CEO of Canberra Hospital and Health Services, and will be expected to develop strong and enduring relationships with a range of other government and non-government stakeholders. As a member of the ACT Public Service Strategic Board, you will play a key part in the leadership of the ACTPS and in the promotion of a culture that reflects agreed service-wide values.
The Ideal Candidate
To be a strong contender, you will need to be an outstanding senior leader, with an impressive record of achievement gained in a comparable health care and/ or human services organisation. You will have a first-hand understanding of service delivery at the community level, including the provision of services for vulnerable people, and a proven capacity to deliver change. Your well-honed policy development and strategic direction setting skills and your relevant stakeholder management experience will be complemented by sound judgement, the ability to broker decisions through collaboration and consensus, and a personal style that engenders trust and respect.
Remuneration and Benefits
The position attracts a total remuneration package ranging from $487,516 to $504,838pa (depending on existing superannuation) including a $433,050 cash (base salary) component, parking (or payment in lieu) and superannuation benefits. Superannuation for defined benefit schemes in other jurisdictions may be portable to the ACT Government in some circumstances.
Contract Period
The successful applicant will be expected to enter into a contract for up to five years.
Location
The position is based in Canberra. However, consideration may be given to a flexible commuting arrangement in the case of an outstanding candidate who is unable to move to Canberra in the short/ medium term.
Other Conditions
To be employed by the ACT Government, applicants must be Australian citizens or have permanent residency status pending the granting of Australian citizenship.
