The Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN), established in 2014, is a partnership between the ACT Government and Canberra’s world class tertiary education and research institutions. It is a not-for-profit organisation and supports innovation and entrepreneurship in the ACT.

CBRIN enables budding entrepreneurs and SMEs to be ambitious and succeed. It supports startups, scaleups, research and tertiary education institutions and industry, at every and any stage of their innovation journey.

CBRIN connects leading experts and mentors with founders and delivers world-class innovation programs uncovering ground-breaking ideas and solving real-world challenges.

CBRIN’s Board of Directors sets strategic direction, ensures good governance, and oversees operations and finances. It strengthens CBRIN’s role as an ecosystem enabler by fostering ties with government and industry to support its vision and socio-economic impact in the ACT.

As an Independent Director, you’ll join at least one sub-committee and attend its meetings.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic guidance: Shape CBRIN’s vision and strategy in support of innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Financial oversight: Review budgets and reports to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Governance: Uphold best practices in risk, compliance, and transparency.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Build relationships with government, industry, and community.
  • Performance evaluation: Assess CBRIN’s impact and recommend improvements.

The CBRIN Board will elect one of its Independent Directors to serve as Board Chair. The Chair must be available to attend in-person meetings and events in Canberra as required and will assume a range of additional responsibilities.

Job description

This opportunity is suited to a skilled leader with board experience who is passionate about entrepreneurship, innovation, and contributing to the ACT’s economic growth.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge, skills, experience and behavioural capabilities including:

  • Proven leadership and board experience, or strong knowledge of governance and board operations, ideally in the not-for-profit sector.
  • Knowledge and experience with the ACT’s innovation ecosystem and knowledge-based industry sectors.
  • Ability to build relationships, manage conflict and foster a culture of innovation, inclusion and continuous improvement.

Independent Directors are renumerated at an annual rate of $5,000 paid quarterly. The CBRIN Board will elect one of its Independent Directors to serve as Board Chair, a position that is also renumerated by CBRIN.

The Independent Director position becomes available on 01 July 2026.
