Details: Applications are sought to fill the position of Senior Director, Legal, Coroners Court.

The Senior Director, Legal (Coroner’s Court) provides support to the Chief Coroner and coroners of the Australian Capital Territory. The Legal Officer assists in carrying out the legal work of the Coroners Unit.

Under the limited direction of the Executive Director, Legal (Coroner’s Court) the Senior Director, Legal (Coroner’s Court) will:

  1. Conduct an initial review of files and provide preliminary advice to coroners.
  2. In appropriate cases, assume carriage of coronial files to manage, including appearing before the coroner as counsel assisting the coroner.
  3. Provide legal support to the coroner, Executive director legal (Coroner’s Court) and counsel assisting the coroner.
  4. Liaise with investigators, families, legal representatives, witnesses, other interested parties and key stakeholders.
  5. Assist in the establishment, develop and maintain policies and procedures in relations to the Coroner’s Court Operations.
  6. Lead capability building initiatives and opportunities, including developing and implementing training for legal officers.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

  • This position requires a degree in laws of an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar, is appropriate to the duties of the office.
  • This position requires admission as a legal practitioner, however described, of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo a National Criminal History check.
