Details: Bimberi Youth Justice Centre (Bimberi) is seeking a dedicated Health and Safety Officer to develop, implement, and maintain robust Work Health and Safety (WHS) systems, policies, and procedures in line with legislative and regulatory requirements.

The Health and Safety Officer are a key role that is responsible for leading, facilitating and implementing the Bimberi Youth Justice Centre, WHS framework. The role will also be responsible for providing high level policy and legislative advice and technical expertise to ensure the safety and wellbeing of employees, clients, visitors and contractors at Bimberi.

In addition, you will also:

  • Conduct trend analysis and data reporting on work health and safety issues, offering sound recommendations for change.
  • Maintain hazard and risk registers with associated treatment plans.
  • Coordinate internal inspections and audits across the facility.
  • Undertake secretariat duties for the Operational Work Health and Safety Committee, presenting updates and inspection information.
  • Promote a positive workplace health and safety culture through effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including community agencies and government services.
  • This position may be required to directly supervise staff.

Essential experience and requirements:

  • Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to - Apply for or renew a WWVP registration - Access Canberra
  • First Aid Certificate or willingness to attend training.
  • Possession of a current Driver’s Licence

Highly desirable qualifications and experience:

  • Current tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety at Certificate IV or Diploma level and experience as a Safety Advisor.
  • Chemical safety and waste management experience
  • Regulatory reporting (e.g. notifiable incident reporting)
