Working in the ACT Government
The ACT Public Sector (ACTPS) consists of eight government departments and several statutory authorities. These departments are responsible for working together to provide the people of the ACT with responsive and accessible services.
A range of services provided can be viewed at the ACT Government website: www.act.gov.au
. To provide these services, the Government employs people in a range of interesting and challenging jobs including nurses, teachers, rangers, gardeners, librarians, and financial and clerical personnel. Good government requires a public service that is highly competent and responsive, politically impartial, and has high standards of integrity to meet the needs of the ACT community.
To ensure that the best person is selected for each job, appointments to positions are on the basis of merit. This means the person who is judged most likely to be the best performer of the duties of the position is recommended for the appointment. Selections are based on assessing the relevant abilities, qualifications, experience, personal qualities and potential for development. The principles of merit, equity and diversity and procedural fairness are integral to recruitment processes in the ACTPS.
